Rev. Gustav Oftedal, Veteran Pastor, Dies
The Rev. Gustav Oftedal, Lutheran evangelist, 3614 Fifth avenue south, died Thursday morning in Norwegian Deaconess hospital. He was one of the first pastors of Trinity Lutheran church and at the time of his death pastor of a Lutheran congregation in Northfield, Minn.
Mr. Oftedal came to Minneapolis from Norway in 1877 and was pastor of churches in Alexandria, Minn., and Buxton, N. D., before coming to Trinity Lutheran church in this city. He is survived by his wife, and three daughters, Gunhild, Laura and Olga of Minneapolis, and six sons, Dr. Hans Oftedal, Vail, Ore.; Dr Arne Oftedal and Dr. Sverie Oftedal, Fargo, N. D.; Dr. Axel Oftedal, Waco, Tex., U. S. A.; Dr. Krygve Oftedal, U. S. Marines, Great Lakes training camp, and Gustav Oftedal, Minneapolis. Funeral services will be held Monday from Lakewood chapel at 2 p. m. The Rev. William Hagen will officiate.

BiographyGustave was born in 1846. He was the son of Svend Oftedal and Gundhild Stokka.
Gustav was a lawyer in Stavanger Norway and a Luthern Clergyman and a Professor at Augsburg Seminary (now a college) in Minnesota. [1] He had married Hanna Oktavia Berg in 1873 and immigrated to the U.S. in 1876 with two children; Hans J. and Gunhild. Together they had seven more children; Arne, Gustave Jr., Severre, Axel, Trygve, Laura, and Olga.
In the 1880 census [2] Gustave, listed as a Minister, and his wife Octavia are living in Minneapolis, Hennepin, Minnesota with their children; Hans (age 6), Gundhild (age 4), Trygve (age 2) and Alne (age 1). In the Minnesota State Census of 1895 [3] shows Gustave and Octavia, and their children Hans, Gundhild, Arne, Gustave yJr., Severre, Axel, Trygve, Laura, and Olga. Of note: the last four of the Oftedahl children are shown being born in North Dakota.
In the 1900 census [4] only Hans has moved away from the family which is now living back in North Dakota, in Buxton Township Buxton & Reynolds cities, Traill. Returning to Minnesota, the Minnesota State Census of 1905 [5] has Gustave and Octavia back in Minneapolis with seven of their children.
In a 1906 passenger list [6] Gustave and his wife Octavia are returning from Christiania (Oslo), Norway on board the Oscar II. They arrived in New York on 27 Nov 1906.
In the 1910 census [7] Gustave and his wife Octavia are living in Minneapolis with seven of their nine children; Gunhild (age 34), Gustav (age 28), Srvere (age 26), Axel (age 24), Trygve (age 22), Laura (age 20) and Olga (age 18).
Gustave passed away in 1918 and is buried next to his wife Oktavia in Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. Find A Grave: Memorial #125425743
